About the Instructor
Kathryn was exposed to art from an early age. Watching her mother and grandmother paint and spending time in their respective studios was a regular and natural part of her childhood. Spending time in museums and making ‘art projects’ were among her favorite pastimes growing up in Salisbury, Maryland. She displayed a precocious creative gift for drawing and painting and was fortunate to be enveloped in a cultured, artistic environment that nurtured her extraordinary talent.
After graduating high school, Kathryn went on to attend Grand Central Atelier in Manhattan under the tutelage of the internationally acclaimed classical master Jacob Collins and several of his most accomplished students.
Engberg graduated from Grand Central Atelier in 2016 and has gone on to teach there, as well as having been invited to teach workshops around the world.
Kathryn is fascinated by the complexity of the human spirit. She paints from the live model as a way to capture the ineffable. Her goal is to produce work that counters the expectation of feminine beauty and perfection. Kathryn’s work explores the unique qualities among diverse body types, ethnicities, and gender identities. Each painting reflects the collaborative spirit between the model and the artist; it is important to Kathryn to capture not only the likeness of the model but also their essence—the quiet, the vulnerable, the truth.
Her work is represented in galleries across the U.S. and owned by collectors around the world. Kathryn Engberg’s studio is in Queens, New York.
