NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!
About Us: The Salisbury Art Space (SBY Art Space) is a non-profit community arts organization with a small ceramics facility. SBY Art Space is seeking a ceramics resident artist committed to developing as a professional artist and/or teacher, and promoting arts in the community.
Application Process: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree. A portfolio of 10-20 images of artwork should be submitted for review. Also include a 1-3 page statement on your artwork and process, experience, and why you would want to be an artist resident at a community art center.
*This position does not include a stipend or living expenses. How would you fulfill the responsibilities of the residency if selected for the position?
Benefits: The artist resident will have 24-hour access to the studio. They will have their own work/storage area. Electric kilns can be fired for cost of electricity (approximately $10 per firing). At the end of their residency the artist resident may choose to have a solo exhibition in the SBY Art Space gallery. The position can be renewed for a second year.
Additional Opportunities: Resident artists may create classes or workshops for adults or kids, and negotiate their rate of pay for extra programming. Resident artists with a Master’s degree will have opportunities to teach adjunct at Salisbury University (SU) and University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). There are great opportunities for selling pottery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia are all only a couple hours drive from Salisbury.
Duration of Residency: 1-2 years (review after year one, with the option to renew for a second year)
Minimum Artist Resident Responsibilities: Our ceramics facilities are modest – large electric kiln, pugmill, 4 Brent pottery wheels, slabroller & extruder – and due to covid precautions we only allow 4-5 individuals to work in the studio at one time. The resident artist will be responsible for monitoring 10 open-studio hours per week, and maintaining the ceramics studio, which includes loading and firing work created during open-studio hours. Keeping the studio clean will be a priority.
About the Area: The Eastern Shore of Maryland has some of the best beaches on the East Coast. Salisbury is less than an hour’s drive from Ocean City and Assateague Island National Seashore.
